Breeding Strategies in the Australian Sheep Industry with Particular Reference to Group Breeding
نویسنده
چکیده
Instead of attempting a full scale review, this paper concentrates on the area of group breeding, firstly reviewing the essential differences between group breeding schemes and the traditional stud ram breeding system, then briefly reviewing the recentfine tuning of the open nucleus ram breem programme of the Australian Merino Society, and final1 +e identifying research and development priorities and challenges or future.

Genetic Relationships between Indicator Traits for Fly Strike Resistance and Production Traits in Merino Sheep
Fly strike in sheep has been estimated to cost the Australian sheep industry approximately $280m dollars annually (Sackett et al. 2006) as a result of sheep losses, cost of treatment and loss of wool and carcase production and value. Historically Australian sheep producers have surgically removed skin from around the tail (mulesing) to help avoid fly strike. Although this has proved highly succ...
متن کاملAn Investigation on Population Structure and Inbreeding of Sangsari Sheep
The aim of this study was to describe inbreeding and population structure in Sangsari sheep breeding station. For this reason, data from 7028 Sangsari sheep which were collected during 1987-2014 in Sangsari sheep breeding station located near to Damghan city, Semnan province were used. Lambs born during 2010-2014 were considered as reference population. The genetic structure analysis of the pop...
متن کاملCongress of Genetics Applied to Livestock Production Genomic Selection in Sheep Breeding Programs
Implementation of genomic selection in sheep breeding provides a number of challenges, compared to dairy cattle, because of the higher genetic diversity between and within sheep breeds, the cost of maintaining reference populations and the limited ability of individual breeders to invest in genotyping. Within this study, we compare theoretical and realized genomic prediction accuracies for trai...
متن کاملInvestigating The Effectiveness of Nutrition on The Sexual and Breeding Behaviors in Ghezel Sheep
This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of nutritional supplements containing vitamins, minerals, and ammonia on the sexual and breeding behaviors in Ghezel sheep. To this end, 28 three and half-year old ewes (50±3 kilograms) with the record of giving birth to two lambs and 4 three-year old (90±3.5 kilograms) rams were used. The ewes were divided into two groups of A (i.e., treatment...
متن کاملA genome-wide scan to detect signatures of recent selection in Australian Merino sheep
Domestication and selection are processes that conserve the pattern of genetic diversities between and within populations. Identification of genomic regions that are targets of selection for phenotypic traits is one of the main aims of research in animal genetics. An approach for identifying divergently selected regions of the genome is to compare FST values among loci to estimate the genetic v...
